However, Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao explained the reason for their absence via Skype chat in which Aamir said:
“After working so hard for a year, when the time came for us to celebrate, this illness, which spreads rapidly, has forced us to stay at home for a week… Today is Friendship Day, so, I asked Shah Rukh Khan to attend the programme in my absence.”

Shah Rukh Khan also thanked Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao for letting him attend the event by tweeting:
“Thx Aamir & Kiran for giving me the honour to stand in for u. Devendra Fadnavis, ur concern for farmers is touching.”
Aamir Khan later expressed his sadness over not being able to be a part of the event by saying:
“It’s a happy day but we are very sad… because after working so hard for a year, when the time came for us to celebrate with you, we got this illness. And the disease we are suffering from is one which spreads rapidly. It’s called H1N1 or swine flu in common usage.”
