Akshay Kumar‘s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha has experienced a decent start at the Indian box office. As of now, Bollywood is going through a rough phase that has given many headaches to trade pundits. The movie has surpassed all expectations by collecting 13.10 crores on its first day.
Talking about some facts, the movie is out in approximately 3000 screens in India. It has a budget of 65 crores including all the costs related to the film. Coming to the opening day of the film, it has received a lukewarm response from the audience. The word-of-mouth of the film ranges from mixed to negative.
The morning occupancy of the film was around 20-25%. The film opened better at single screens compared to multiplexes. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha is a tailor-made film for the massy audience. With funny scenes and witty dialogues fueled with emotional drama, the film was destined to work well at smaller centres. However, the opening for the film is quite disappointing. Considering the fact that Shah Rukh Khan‘s Jab Harry Met Sejal experienced similar fate back in the day, trade experts believe that the Akshay Kumar starrer may fall below the expectations continuing the bad phase of Bollywood.
Despite the average response from the audience, it is going to cross the 10 crore mark on its first day. However, the film has to show ample growth throughout the weekend. Additionally, it has to take full advantage of the Monday holiday to put up good box office numbers. Like morning, the noon occupancy of the film was around 30% which is quite average for a much-hyped film like Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. The movie needs to collect around 80-90 crores to get a hit tag. The tax exemption might help the film in bringing a good amount of money as well. The occupancy for the film increased rapidly in evening shows that helped the movie to post such an amazing first day total at the Indian box office.
Another good sign for the film is that the response from the masses is not as much bad as Jab Harry Met Sejal. The first day of the movie was amazing from the trade perspective. Still, costs of the movie are on the higher side and one would have expected Toilet: Ek Prem Katha to perform much better than this. It has to follow an upward trend throughout the weekend and earn at least 50 crores in its first four-day run. The movie is a love story of Keshav [Akshay Kumar] and Jaya [Bhumi Pednekar], a couple who are separated from each other due to the absence of sanitization facility at Keshav’s home.
