Raazi – starring Alia Bhat and Vicky Kaushal – has not only won incredible critical acclaim, but also minted a solid INR 32.94 crore at the box office during its opening weekend. This only shows that the movie has won the hearts of the audiences as well.
This espionage thriller, directed by Meghna Gulzar, has surpassed the collections of several women-centric movies released over the last few years. Produced by Dharma Productions and Junglee Pictures, Raazi has seen the 5th highest opening for a Bollywood movie in the year 2018. Being released in around 1250 theatres on May 11, it earned INR 7.53 crore on Friday, INR 11 .30 crore on Saturday and INR 14.11 crore on Sunday.
Adapted from the novel ‘Calling Sehmat’ written by Harinder S Sikka, the story revolves around a young Kashmiri woman (an Indian intelligence agent) who gets married to a military officer from Pakistan to collect vital details while keeping her actual motives a secret. The movie, scripted by Bhavani Iyer and Gulzar, also stars Jaideep Ahlawat, Rajit Kapur, Shishir Sharma and Soni Razdan. However, it is Alia Bhatt’s show all through.
According to sources from the industry, the opening weekend business of Raazi surpasses those of other women-centric films, especially Hichki (700 theatres, INR 15.35 crore), Naam Shabhana (1600 theatres, INR 17.75 crore), Queen (883 screens, INR 9.68 crore), Mardaani (1064 theatres, INR 14 crore), Pari (1150 screens, INR 13.5 crore) and Mom (1350 screens, INR 14.25 crore).
