Me too, the movement to fight all types of sexual harassment in the workplace, has been making waves since it started in October 2017. Through the last year, many celebrities have spoken up and come out with their stories on the subject.
The latest celebrity to join others like Sonam Kapoor, Twinkle Khanna, Swara Bhaskar and Priyanka Chopra is none other than Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. This is not the first time that she has spoken about her ordeals with physical abuse. “I have always spoken out. I spoke in the past, I am speaking now, and I will continue to speak,” she says. She acknowledged the role of social media in helping the women find their voice and using it to fight against an age-old problem.
The relationship between Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan has been well known in Bollywood. The relationship had started on the sets of “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” in 1999. They broke up in 2002 after Aishwarya accused him of cheating and misbehaviour. Post that she was harassed by him by means of phone calls and even verbal abuses at times.
She had spoken out then and she has spoken out now to stand in support of women who have been subjected to such demeaning behaviour. She believes that time is always right to take a stand and speak against such crimes and the perpetrators. She is happy to see the effect of the movement.
Recently, #Me too has gained momentum again since Tanushree Dutta has claimed misconduct by Nana Patekar and Ganesh Acharya on the sets of “Horn OK, Pleassss” which was shot ages back. Post that, many other celebrities such as Vikas Bahl, Utsav Chakraborty, Gursimran Khamba and Alok Nath have been accused of sexual crimes by other crew members and celebrities who claimed to have worked with them.
